What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
To be the place to be to start your career, raise a family, and ultimately retire all right here. I'd love to see young professionals staying in Knoxville to launch their careers, a vibrant downtown filled with options for all ages, and a truly connected city that embraces a diverse culture and the beautiful surroundings.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
I'm not sure it's a secret, but the access to outdoor activities is what makes Knoxville special. 45 minutes from the Smokies, 7 lakes surrounding the city, mountain biking, hiking, greenways, beautiful views, parks, and so much more. I think that's what differentiates Knoxville from other competing cities.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
Find ways to further connect Knoxville. Knoxville has many diverse neighborhoods and cultures, and I'd love to find ways to connect these groups together. More civic furniture downtown (the stadium is a great start - children's museum, waterfront development would be next), connected greenways, community events. In real estate, I would love to see greater access to affordable housing and less restrictive zoning and approval processes.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
That's an easy one. Getting married September 22nd, 2012 at maple grove inn. It was a wonderful night and great celebration with my best friend. The birth of both Owen and Reed at Fort Sanders. Honorable mention would probably be the 6 OT win against Arkansas I think in 2002. I will always remember being at that game with my dad.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
I just finished Demon Copperhead by Barbara kingsolver (it was excellent). Currently reading The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
Jim Wallace has taught me many lessons in humility, service to others, and in leadership. He talks about the Power T's, and it hangs in my office - Be Thankful, Trust in God through the process, and Transform - be a transformational leader with integrity, encouragement, and innovative thinking.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
I may have to go back and slap my 16 year old self! I had plenty of maturing still to do. But I'd love to tell him to be more self-confident and secure in who you are and that everything will be ok. You don't have to be anything you're not. Be yourself and always be kind.
