What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
Knoxville's appeal lies in its combination of rural and urban settings. When I was a child, you couldn't drive ten minutes without seeing hay bales. That grew to fifteen minutes as a young adult, but now it's twenty to thirty minutes. I hope that our governments can implement sustainable growth which does not sacrifice the character and rural/urban dichotomy of Knoxville. Infrastructure, like schools and roads, need to grow in a smart way along with the masses of neighborhoods that used to be farms, and Knoxville can hopefully keep its charming big small town feel.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Using Middlebrook and Sutherland Avenue as low traffic crosstown conduits is my favorite secret! Sutherland also has the greatest food in town- start with the chicken soup at El Charro, followed by fried shrimp at Emma's, anything from the burger to the tabbouleh at Holy Land Market and Deli, Ethiopian at Gosh, and bring your own wine to Savellis for casual old school Italian. Top it off with a stroll on the greenway, and a pop in River Sports for some new gear.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
Knoxville's city and county governments need to work together to implement smart and consistent planning and land use that preserves the unique charm of Knoxville, versus creating a land of big box stores and identikit houses.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
There's too many to choose from! Growing up here was a magical time- going to White Stores for the weekly shop with my mom then milkshakes at Long's, concerts all summer long on the World's Fair Lawn, and cheering on the Vols at Neyland. I love to be outside, and as teenagers we took full advantage of Knoxville's outdoor playground-swimming in quarries, hitting the lake immediately after school, and camping or hiking every minute we could.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
The New Cold Wars by David E. Sanger and God of the Woods by Liz Moore. I love a combo of nonfiction and a literary mystery.
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
Don't let your ego get in the way of you and your family's happiness" and "Quit projecting- don't worry about scenarios that have only occurred in your imagination cause you stress". Both from Tom Harper (my father)
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Clean your room! It is so easy and it will make your mother so happy! And you need make your parents happy any chance you get.
