What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
My vision for Knoxville is a thriving, united city where all communities have equitable access to education, economic opportunity, and wellness. Our united city will be led by collaborative, inclusive leadership that uplifts every voice and nurtures future generations.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Knoxville's best kept secret is the deep-rooted network of passionate community leaders and grassroots organizations quietly transforming lives. The transformation is being done especially in underserved areas through mentorship, education, and service.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
I would strengthen Knoxville by fostering partnerships that expand access to quality education, leadership development, and community resources which would ensure all residents, across all neighborhoods, have the opportunity to thrive, contribute, and lead.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
My favorite memory of Knoxville is watching students I've mentored walk across the graduation stage; many were first-generation graduates. Also knowing that our community's support helped make their dreams possible which in turns keep me inspired.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
Currently on my nightstand is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
Over 50 years ago, my mother, Marrine Russell, instilled in me a powerful motto: "Excellence without excuses." I've carried those words with me ever since. Living by that principle has been the foundation of my success and the standard I hold myself to every day.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Trust your voice, stay focused on your purpose, and don't let fear of failure hold you back. Every challenge is preparing you for something greater. Keep showing up, keep learning, and never forget that excellence begins with belief in yourself.
