What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
In 2034, I want to see Knoxville and the surrounding region being a model for what is possible. Knoxville is already a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship so I think we need to continue to use that to attract the best and the brightest! I love the strong sense of community and how the region embraces its Appalachian heritage but is also becoming more progressive in the areas of inclusivity, a vibrant arts culture, and green energy opportunities - these are things that people in the region want and deserve more of! Promoting economic mobility and providing opportunities for all to achieve their own goals, is my vision for the region!
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Southern hospitality could be considered Knoxville's best-kept secret! I love hearing from people of all ages, all backgrounds who say that Knoxville and this region captured them because of the warmth, friendliness, and charm they felt when they came to Knoxville. The Univerity of Tennessee adds a vibrant (orange) undertone to the area and the community events that we are known for bring people together with arguably one of the most beautiful backdrops of a major city!
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
I think an underutilized component is more comprehensive planning and collaboration between public, private & non-profit sectors. I think we are just beginning to harness the full potential of public-private partnerships to drive positive change and sustainable development in our region. Projects are often seen as competition but there is a seat at the table for everyone who really wants to be there but it is a giant puzzle that is hard to put together in the correct way!
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
Vol Navy was one of the first things I ever did in Knoxville which made it a memorable experiences! Really any event that takes place in Neyland Stadium (ball games, concerts, Evening in Orange) have been some of my most memorable events in Knoxville.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
I am personally more of an Elin Hilderbrand kind of girl but currently I am reading The Little Engine That Could every night to my almost 4 year-old who is obsessed with trains!
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
A better way, every day!" - LeeAnn Foster is my long term executive coach, friend and mentor. When I am feeling overwhelmed at trying to do everything better, I am reminded that just making small, incremental changes is really the way to lasting improvement and progress!
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Listen! The most helpful thing you can often do for others is to LISTEN! This is also a great way to learn a lot of information and about a lot of opportunities. When I was 16, I thought I had it all figured out and only now am I fully able to see that I know so very little - ha!
