What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
It's no secret that Knoxville is a great place to live and raise a family. It has a relatively low cost of living and is also very business friendly. We need to work on controlling Knoxville's growth so things don't change too fast around here. It's important to focus preserving our great city as best we can. There is no doubt many new and wonderful things will happen to our city in the next 10 years. We will experience our highest ever rate of growth within this 10 year horizon. I'd like to see Knoxville control it's growth with a focus on preserving our identity as east Tennesseans. I see our downtown continuing to thrive, improved accessibility and increased attractions along the waterfront property, I see expanded greenspaces with more tree canopy and better mobility all across the city.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
The portion of the TN river upstream from town is very underutilized. If you know how to navigate across the Holston River shoals you can access several beautiful miles of river and a small creek on the inside of Armstrong island that's a perfect place to cool off on a hot summer day.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
Focus on improving traffic flow so we don't end up like our neighbors to the west. Knoxville benefits immeasurably from greenspace. Improving access to and expanding our greenspaces will strengthen our city. Provide facilities to help troubled people get back on their feet. Create workforce development avenues to help underprivileged people find better opportunities to make a better living.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
The Vols winning the 1998 National Championship in football, moreover the entire 1998 season is something I will always cherish.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
Lords of the Fly: Madness, Obsession and the Hunt for the World-Record Tarpon
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
Get outside of your comfort zone. - David L.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
There are a lot of pieces of advice you hear that sound cliche, but these shouldn't be taken for granted. I would tell myself not to take criticism negatively, learn from it and use it as motivation to improve. Learn about and respect everyone's perspectives and do not judge people. Be respectful of other people's property. If something seems like it has the potential of being too good to be true it probably is, so be cautious with your ambition. Embrace the advice you are given by people you look up to.
