What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
My vision for Knoxville in 10 years is to significantly increase diversity in the professional realm, fostering innovation and inclusion. This progress will enhance cultural prosperity, drive economic growth, strengthen our social fabric, and make Knoxville a thriving, forward-thinking hub.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Knoxville's best-kept secret is its small-town vibe. Despite being one of Tennessee's largest cities, it feels like a close-knit community. As someone from a small town, I love its charm. Plus, it's just 3-4 hours from major cities, offering a perfect balance. This makes Knoxville a unique and wonderful place to call home.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
To strengthen Knoxville, I would partner with local universities to create innovative educational preparation programs specifically for cohorts of diverse candidates, addressing the gap between diverse educators and our diverse student population. This includes retention strategies like residency programs, mentorship, competitive salaries, and relevant professional development. Fostering a sense of community among educators and recognizing their achievements will help recruit and retain high-quality teachers. These efforts will not only address the educator gap but also increase diversity in Knoxville's young professionals, enriching our workforce and creating a more inclusive community.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
This is a tough one, as I have so many fond memories. One that particularly stands out is my very first experience marching as a member of The University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band during the pregame show and experiencing the opening of the "T." Marching and trying to play my trombone while hearing the sound of 100,000 fans roaring and cheering was overwhelming and exhilarating for an 18-year-old college kid from a small town. This unique experience allowed me to truly understand and appreciate the immense pride, passion, and tradition of being a Vol!
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
I'm currently reading "Finding Your Leadership Soul: What Our Students Can Teach Us About Love, Care, and Vulnerability" by Carlos R. Moreno. It's a really insightful book that dives into how our students can teach us about genuine leadership. Moreno shares stories and lessons on how love, care, and vulnerability are key to being a great leader. It's a fantastic read that gives a fresh perspective on leadership, showing how these qualities can make a real difference in how we lead and connect with others.
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
The best advice I've received came from my mom, my lifelong mentor. She taught me the importance of integrity, "doing the right thing and doing it the right way, which includes learning from your mistakes to keep moving forward." This principle has shaped my personal and professional life, guiding me through challenges and aiming to treat others with respect and fairness. Her wisdom taught me that genuine leadership is built on trust, transparency, and ethical behavior.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
If I could give my 16-year-old self advice, I'd say: don't worry about what others think and embrace your authentic self. True happiness comes from being genuine. Also, become financially literate and start investing early. Understanding money management and making smart investments opens opportunities and secures a legacy. Financial literacy must be prioritized in education, especially in diverse communities, to break the cycle of instability. Focus on self-acceptance and financial independence to navigate life confidently, make informed decisions, and create a secure future for yourself and others.
