What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
Knoxville will have continued the steady growth we see today. Growth will have impacted both the city core and its suburban areas. More creative approaches to housing and mobility will be palpable. The impact of electric vehicles of all types will be meaningful. Digital-based economies will have changed what we need from the civic space of the city.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
The region in which the city is located is as interesting as it is beautiful and most think only about the beauty of it.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
Rethink the relationship between the city and the university. Be more sophisticated about climate, natural resources, and energy. Invest more in public education. Cultivate new economies. Empower community groups. Build on the scientific histories of the region.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
First visit to Norris Dam and realizing as I overlooked the dam - the lake on one side, the river on the other - that I was looking at one part of a vast design (the TVA) that modernized the people of this region. It gave me goose bumps and a strong sense of expectancy.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
The Creative Act: A Way of Being" by Rick Rubin
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
I had a great relationship with a new boss that I had only known for 6-8 months when in one of our amazing conversations, he told me that I needed to grow up. He was blunt with the comment. It took me aback. And I needed some time to regroup. But he was right. I had plenty of growing still to do. I realized how easy it would have been on him to never say what he said to me that day.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Have more confidence in yourself when you see that you can do things well. You can trust your experiences.
