What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
I hope Knoxville finds the sweet spot between prosperity and conservancy. Our city is a vibrant place with a rich history and a distinctive vibe. We must evolve and expand with intention while maintaining our unique character and sense of community.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Knoxville has a thriving yoga community thanks to Philip Clift, the force behind Renegade Yoga Institute. It's a locally owned boutique studio in Bearden that features authentic Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, and it's where I find my bliss.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
Let's revisit the conversation about consolidating Knoxville and Knox County governments. We're experiencing unprecedented population growth and a surge in business development, so it's timely and relevant to explore our options.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
Those rare and magical snowstorms when the whole city stood still and rapt. School closed for days and days. No mobile devices interrupted being out in it. The Knoxville snow of my childhood was wet and heavy and utterly unfazed by the chaos it caused.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel. It's the only book I've ever read twice.
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
My father was both my mentor and my role model. Late in his life, Dad told me happiness was a choice he had made every single day. "Choose to be happy" is the best advice he gave me. That, and, "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Speak your truth and don't try to please everyone. Have firm boundaries and learn to say no. Don't make yourself smaller to make other people feel bigger. Be kind. Always.
