What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
One of my favorite things about Knoxville is its strong sense of community. It's the kind of place where neighbors look out for one another and local events feel like family reunions. It's also incredibly family-friendly, with great schools, beautiful parks, and year-round activities that make it a wonderful place to raise kids.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Perhaps not so much a secret, but every time I am out at Ijams and the quarry, I am reminded how lucky we are to have such natural beauty so close to downtown.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
To strengthen Knoxville, I'd prioritize investing in community spaces that bring people together - starting with our libraries. We have previously lived in Nashville and Birmingham where there are modern library facilities that bring in children of all ages. Updating Knoxville's library facilities with modern technology, cozy gathering spaces, and hands-on learning tools would make them true hubs for connection and creativity. Expanding family programming at these facilities would also benefit our community. In addition, I believe Knoxville would benefit tremendously from building a state-of-the-art science center - something on par with what Nashville and Chattanooga offer. A dynamic, interactive space focused on STEM education would inspire curiosity, serve as a major draw for school field trips, and provide year-round learning opportunities for families across the region. These investments would help foster a more connected, curious, and future-ready Knoxville.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
Some of my favorite Knoxville memories is being part of the incredible neighborhood traditions in Sequoyah Hills. There's something truly special about our annual Labor Day picnic - families spread out on blankets, kids playing kickball, and live bluegrass music. Halloween is another full-blown extravaganza, with neighbors going all out and the streets packed with trick-or-treaters in costumes. Our 4th of July parade brings in a firetruck and that unforgettable moment when hoses spray down the street. And of course, our neighborhood Christmas gathering with Santa himself brings the magic of the season.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
The Wedding People by Alison Espach
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
I had the honor of working for East Tennessee great, Sen. Lamar Alexander, who regularly reflected on the beauty and uniqueness of East Tennessee and the value of protecting it. This has always stayed with me.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Say yes to opportunities to get to know people. The connections you build will shape your future.
