What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?

Knoxville in 2036 will be a city that leads with purpose, serves with humility, and grows without losing its heritage. Rooted in the values that have long defined us, faith, service, education, hard work, and community, Knoxville will embrace its future while honoring the traditions and relationships that brought us here. As a nationally recognized model of servant leadership, Knoxville will measure success not only by economic growth, but by the well-being of its people. Our leaders, businesses, educators, healthcare systems, and civic organizations will work together to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to thrive. We will cultivate a culture where service comes before self, where collaboration outweighs competition, and where decisions are made with future generations in mind. Our identity as a vibrant college town will remain at the heart of who we are. The University of Tennessee will continue to serve as a catalyst for innovation, talent development, research, and entrepreneurship. Students will choose to stay, launch careers, and build families here because Knoxville offers opportunity, affordability, and an unmatched quality of life. At the same time, Knoxville will emerge as one of America's leading midsized cities, recognized for its innovation, healthcare excellence, outdoor amenities, sustainable growth, and thriving economy. We will attract world-class employers, support local businesses, and create connected neighborhoods where people of all backgrounds feel welcomed and valued. Ten years from now, Knoxville will stand as a city that proves progress and heritage can coexist; a city that leads through service, inspires through innovation, and remains deeply committed to the people and values that define East Tennessee.

What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?

One of Knoxville's best-kept secrets is that beneath its friendly Southern charm lies an incredibly rich and growing multicultural community. While many people know Knoxville for the University of Tennessee, the Smoky Mountains, and its deep Appalachian roots, fewer realize that the city offers a remarkable opportunity to experience cultures from around the world without ever leaving East Tennessee. In Knoxville, diversity is woven into daily life. Families and professionals from every continent have chosen to call this city home, bringing with them unique traditions, languages, festivals, businesses, and perspectives. On any given weekend, you can attend an international cultural celebration, explore global art and music, or meet neighbors whose stories span generations and countries. Perhaps nowhere is this diversity more visible than through food. Knoxville’s culinary scene has evolved into a global destination where visitors can enjoy authentic flavors from Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. From family-owned restaurants and specialty markets to cultural festivals and food trucks, every meal becomes an opportunity to discover something new. What makes Knoxville special is not just the presence of many cultures, but how those cultures enrich and strengthen the community. People come together to learn from one another, celebrate differences, and build lasting connections while maintaining the warmth and hospitality that define East Tennessee. As Knoxville continues to grow, its multicultural character represents one of its greatest assets. It is a city where you can expand your horizons, experience the world through your neighbors, and discover that some of life’s most meaningful lessons, adventures, and flavors are found right here at home.

What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?

I will work to strengthen Knoxville and East Tennessee by building bridges between people, organizations, and communities to create opportunities that improve quality of life for everyone. I believe our region's greatest strength is its people, and lasting progress happens when we bring together diverse perspectives around a shared vision of service, growth, and stewardship. As a leader, I will champion servant leadership by listening first, seeking common ground, and focusing on solutions that benefit future generations. I will support initiatives that improve healthcare access, educational achievement, workforce development, and economic opportunity, particularly in rural and underserved communities. By investing in the health and well-being of our residents, we can create a stronger foundation for families, businesses, and communities to thrive. I will work to foster partnerships among government, education, healthcare, nonprofits, and the private sector to address our region’s most pressing challenges while advancing innovation and growth. I will advocate for initiatives that attract and retain talent, support entrepreneurs, and create environments where young people can build meaningful careers without leaving East Tennessee. At the same time, I am committed to preserving the values, traditions, and natural beauty that make this region special. From our Appalachian heritage to our vibrant college-town culture, we must honor the character of our communities while embracing new opportunities. My goal is to help East Tennessee become a model for collaborative leadership, economic vitality, and community well-being. By serving others, investing in people, and working together with purpose, we can ensure Knoxville and the surrounding region remain a place where businesses prosper, families flourish, and future generations are proud to call home.

What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?

One of the most impactful pieces of advice I have received from Dr. Mukta Panda is that no matter how much medicine changes, we must never lose sight of the humanity at its core. Technology will advance, treatments will improve, and healthcare systems will continue to evolve, but patients will always need to feel seen, heard, and cared for as people, not diagnoses. Dr. Panda often reminds physicians that healing begins with connection. While science provides the knowledge to treat disease, compassion creates the trust that allows healing to occur. Taking a few extra moments to listen to a patient’s story, understand their fears, or simply sit beside them during a difficult moment can have as much impact as any medication or procedure. Her message is especially important in a time when healthcare professionals face increasing demands, administrative burdens, and burnout. It can be easy to become focused on tasks, documentation, and productivity metrics. Dr. Panda teaches that preserving the soul of medicine requires intentionally returning to the reason most of us entered the profession in the first place: to serve others during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. She encourages physicians to see every patient encounter as an opportunity to demonstrate empathy, kindness, and respect. Small gestures matter. A comforting word, a hand on a shoulder, or taking time to answer a family’s questions can leave a lasting impression long after the clinical details are forgotten. The soul of medicine lives in those human connections. Dr. Panda’s advice is a reminder that while curing is important, caring is what patients remember most and what gives medicine its deepest meaning and purpose.

What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?

If I could give advice to my 16-year-old self, it would be this: failure is not the opposite of success; it is part of the journey. In fact, I would tell myself that the word FAIL can stand for First Attempt In Learning. Some of the moments that will feel like disappointments, setbacks, or wrong turns will actually become the experiences that teach the most valuable lessons. Do not be afraid to try, to take risks, or to pursue goals that seem beyond your reach. Growth almost always requires a willingness to be uncomfortable. I would also tell myself to have more grace and empathy for myself. You will spend much of your life encouraging others, believing in them, and helping them see their strengths. Remember to extend that same kindness inward. The standards you set for yourself will often be higher than anyone else's. Striving for excellence is admirable, but perfection is impossible. Learn to celebrate progress, forgive mistakes, and recognize that your worth is never determined by your achievements alone. Most importantly, I would remind my younger self that while loving and caring for others is one of your greatest gifts, you must learn to love yourself too. Selflessness is powerful, but it should never come at the expense of your own well-being. Take time to rest. Protect your peace. Invest in your health, your relationships, and your dreams. Life will unfold in ways you cannot imagine. Trust yourself, embrace the lessons that come with every challenge, and remember that the person you become will be shaped as much by your failures as by your successes.
