What is your vision for Knoxville 10 years from now?
I want to see a Knoxville that continues to grow and expand without forgetting its down-home roots, where all citizens feel safe, secure, and welcome in our community.
What is Knoxville's Best Kept Secret?
Knoxville has so many wonderful ways for people to enjoy the great outdoors. You could kayak one day and go mountain biking the next, all without leaving Knoxville. One of my family's favorites is hiking at Ijams.
What would you do to strengthen Knoxville?
Knoxville needs more services and treatment options for people suffering from mental health or substance misuse disorders. These individuals often end up in a criminal justice system that was not designed to provide these services but has become the default service provider. The opioid epidemic and increase in overdose deaths have highlighted how pervasive this issue is and how much need there is in our community.
What is your favorite Knoxville memory?
Some of my favorite Knoxville memories come from coaching soccer. There were many early mornings at Lakeshore Park, setting up fields still wet with dew so clumps of tiny players could follow the ball around the field until someone accidentally scored. Time on the clock eventually ran out, and the players then earned their actual victory: post-game snacks and juice boxes.
What is your favorite book or what book is currently on your nightstand?
The Count of Monte Cristo
What is the best advice you have received from a mentor, and who was that mentor?
I have been blessed to have so many wonderful mentors over the years that I could not choose just one, but some of the best advice I received is to have the strength to stand for what is just.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
Tomorrow is not promised so make the most of today.
